Topic: Virgin Islands Geography

Grade level: K-1

Primary curricular area:   Social Studies

Connected curricular areas:  Language Arts

Curriculum objective: The students will identify and label each of the four U.S. Virgin Islands on a map.  They will compare the relative sizes of the islands and the relative compass locations (North, South , East and West)

Time Line: One school period
Resources:
   A Mac computer, the software, Claris for Kids, the file entitled the Four Virgin Islands, color printer, overhead projector, tansparency of a line map of the four main U.S. Virgin Islands, labeled transparency cutouts of each island.
Activities:
       Place the line map transparency on the overhead.  Students will examine the puzzle pieces, locate and identify,  by name, the one that represents the biggest island.  They will place the "puzzle piece" on the outline of the island.  They will follow the same procedure for the other three Islands.  Discuss the four primary compass points and identify those points on the map.  Students will again place the puzzle pieces on the map according to specified criteria such "Place the island on the map that is the most northerly," etc.

Assessment:
Each student will open the "Four Islands" Claris for Kids document on a computer.  They will use the art tools to color each island according to the instructions on the screen.  Discuss method of selection of  the color and the paint tools.  Students will print their map of the four Islands.

Enrichment:
Students could add appropriate graphics to their map and indicate the direction of the four primary compass points.
