Melvin H. Evans was the last appointed governor and the first elected governor. Evans was a medical doctor before becoming governor. He was a Republican and his running mate was David E. Maase.
Cyril King was first government secretary in 1961. He was acting governor for 4 months after Governor Paiewonsky resigned in 1969. He was leader of the Independent Citizens Movement (ICM). King became the second elected governor of the Virgin Islands on January 1975.
Juan F. Luis was lieutenant governor in 1978 when he became governor as a result of Cyril Kingís death. Because he served Kingís final two years and was elected to two 4 year terms, he was the first governor to serve more that 8 years.
Alexander Farrelly was the first Democrat to be elected governor. He was born in
Frederiksted, St. Croix on 12/29/23. He was an attorney, served as a judge, and was elected to the Legislature. Derek Hodge was his Lieutenant Governor.
Roy Lester Schneider was a medical doctor born in St.Thomas on 5/13/39. He was a Commissioner of Health during the Juan Luis administration. He performed the first Kidney Transplant in the VI. Although he was a Republican he was elected governor as an Independent.
Charles W. Turnbull, a Democrat, is currently the Governor of the Virgin Islands. He was a history professor at U.V.I. and once served as Commissioner of Education.
